Today’s Topic Is About Competitions among tech companies in China and United States
Along with the trade war, there are other concerns about the equity of competition among tech companies. The first is local protectionism. Because of the great firewall in China, some global applications like Facebook, google and twitter cannot enter into the market in China, but on the other side, some Chinese apps like tik tok enter into the United States market and obtain lots of users and make a fortune. The second is the safety and privacy of users’ data. Whether Chinese companies obey the same rule about data safety with the United States is still in concern, and without doubt, a company having more data about users can better predict their behavior. Besides that, by showing different content to different users, like showing some racist things to racists, the company can influence users’ thinking and control some critical events like elections to a certain degree, for example, Facebook’s scandals on interfering elections in 2016. The third is freedom of speech. Obviously people in China and the United States have different degrees of freedom of speech, and companies in these two countries put different amounts of effort into sensor sensitive or illegal information. Discrepancies on values definitely bring about conflicts on people’s rights to say freely. The fourth is the government’s involvement. All Chinese companies need to follow the basic rules set by governments, including both the explicit and implicit rules. Undoubtedly, a Chinese company needs to promise its functions for the nation prior to its own benefits. Although some are the same for United States companies, the degree is different. Another involvement of the government is government’s grants for Chinese companies, so actually it is easier for Chinese companies to lower their products’ price to win the competition. Sometimes their goals may not be maximizing their profits but other political or diplomatic goals. But whether grants are justified is hard to say, and in my opinion, if we look back at history, it is really hard for the following companies to beat up big companies which already control the market and win a reputation.
